India's First and Largest Network of Small-Town Kirana Stores
1knetworks is an Indian startup that has created a wholesale marketplace for retailers and institutional buyers. Their mission is to disrupt the grocery supply chain in India through mobile commerce, data science and analytics. 1K Kirana Bazaar, the flagship brand and app, is one of India’s first and largest network of small town kirana stores. The 1K Kirana Bazaar app has 30,000 downloads with 15,000+ active users. In 2 years, they have been able to double the store count, triple the revenues and improve the unit economics by 80%. The company is already unit economics positive through their trade margins and are reliably trending upwards month on month. Their next growth steps are to look at further monetizing the network through multiple strategic initiatives by launching its own brands and category expansion. Founded in 2019, 1knetworks has offices in New Delhi, Gurugram, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad today. The founding team has long standing relationships dating back to 2012. Whilst some are IIMA batch mates and some have worked together, all 5 share a similar vision: which is to reimagine offline commerce with online experience for tier 2+ towns of India. By blending technology and consumer data, the company aims to create a seamless flow of goods from brands to consumers and overcome the shortcomings of traditional distribution systems.
The Indian retail story is incomplete without local stores and their entrepreneurial spirit that serves every need of the Indian consumer. India has over 12 million retailers in tier 2 cities and this is an opportunity to use technology to provide sustainable livelihoods for them. 1knetworks wants to support them in buying efficiently and timely. The company is building India’s first network of Offline and Online (O&O) hyperlocal stores. These ‘tech-enabled Kiranas’ will have an AI/ML enabled platform to help decision making driven by historical sales data, consumer preferences and local micro-market level intelligence, an integrated backend system and automated inventory replenishment. This is besides countless features and systems from POS software, product catalogues, promotional activities and loyalty programs, to branding for stores, every convenience /upgrade the digital platform can offer can be made accessible to India’s Kirana network. The depth and scale of what 1knetworks is trying to build are considerable and challenging. You’ll be developing and maintaining highly scalable user-facing software applications, and changing the future of commerce for tier 2+ towns of India.
Interesting work that creates impact and changes lives of millions of retailers who form a crucial service network of the country.
